Best body pillow for side sleepers: length and fill — PillowBrief guide

Side sleeping is comfortable for many people, but it can leave the top knee dropping forward and the lower spine twisting. A body pillow is a simple way to keep the hips and knees in a straighter line, and it can also give the shoulders and chest something to rest against.

It is not a treatment for back or neck pain, and it does not replace a head pillow that actually fits. This guide explains who benefits, the main shapes and fills, and how to choose one without paying for a feature you do not need.

What a body pillow does

A body pillow is a long cushion you hug or tuck alongside your body. For a side sleeper it usually does three things:

  • Supports the top knee so the hips do not roll forward and twist the lower back.
  • Gives the arms and shoulders somewhere to rest instead of collapsing inward.
  • Keeps the spine closer to its natural line from the hips to the shoulders.

It helps most when it matches your height and sleeping position. A pillow that is too short leaves the knees unsupported; one that is too long can crowd the head pillow and take over the bed.

Choose the shape by how you sleep

  • Full-length (straight) body pillow. A long cylinder that runs from about the chest to past the knees. The most common choice for side sleepers, and the easiest to fit to your height.
  • U-shaped body pillow. Wraps around both sides, so it stays put when you turn from one side to the other. Bigger and warmer, and it takes more bed space.
  • Knee pillow. A short pillow placed between the knees. Enough for some people and much smaller, but it does nothing for the arms and chest.
  • Pregnancy pillow. Often a larger U or C shape with extra support for the bump and back. Useful for side sleeping in general, not only during pregnancy.

If you also want a head pillow that suits side sleeping, see our guide to the best pillow for side sleepers and match the two.

Compare the fill

Fill Feel Watch for
Memory foam (solid) Steady, supportive, holds shape Sleeps warmer; usually not machine washable
Shredded foam Adjustable, you add or remove fill Can need occasional topping up
Polyester or down-alternative Soft, light, easy to wash Compresses over time and needs fluffing
Latex Bouncy, responsive, durable Firmer feel; heavier

Memory foam body pillows are popular because they support the hips and knees without needing to be folded. If you sleep hot, a cooling cover or a shredded fill that lets air move may suit you better. Our memory foam vs latex pillow comparison covers the fills in more detail.

Length, firmness and cover

  • Length. Full-length pillows are usually about the sleeper’s height. Match the pillow to your body and leave room for your head pillow.
  • Firmness. You want enough support to keep the knee and hip aligned without pushing the top leg forward. Adjustable fill lets you tune this.
  • Cover. Look for a removable, washable cover, since a body pillow sits against your skin and hair. Check how the cover fastens and whether a replacement is sold.
  • Heat. A body pillow lies against a lot of your body, so it can run warm. A breathable cover helps.

Care and returns

Read the care label before buying. Solid memory foam generally should not be machine washed or submerged, while removable covers often can be. Check the return window, whether washed items are eligible, and the shipping cost of returning a large item, since a body pillow is bulky to send back.

Common questions

What is the best body pillow for side sleepers?

There is no single best one. A full-length or U-shaped body pillow suits people who want support from the chest to the knees, while a shorter knee pillow is enough for some. Choose by your sleeping position, your height and how much support and heat you want, then check the fill, cover and return terms. A body pillow works alongside a supportive head pillow, not instead of it.

Is a memory foam body pillow good?

Memory foam gives steady, supportive pressure relief and holds its shape, which some side sleepers find comfortable at the hips and knees. It can also sleep warmer and is usually not machine washable, so check the cover care. Shredded or adjustable fill is a good option if you want to tune the firmness.

How long should a body pillow be?

Long enough to support from roughly your chest or shoulder down past the knees without crowding your head pillow. Full-length pillows are usually about the height of the sleeper, while U-shaped pillows wrap around both sides. Measure your bed width too, since a large pillow takes up space.

Do I still need a pillow for my head?

Yes. A body pillow supports the hips, knees and spine; your head and neck still need a pillow sized to keep your head level with your spine. Use our side-sleeper head pillow guide to fit that one, then add a body pillow for the lower half.
