Pillow loft: find the height that fits your bed
A practical way to compare pillow height, mattress sink, and sleeping position without relying on a universal inch chart.
PillowBrief shares ownership with some stores we mention. Read our disclosure.
Pillow loft means height. The number on a product page usually describes an unloaded pillow, but your head rests on a compressed one. Two pillows that measure the same height can feel quite different once you lie down. One may hold its shape; another may flatten or let its fill move aside.
A useful purchase starts with a description of what your current pillow does. “I keep folding it” gives you more to work with than “I need a luxury pillow.” This guide is an observation worksheet for adults, not a prescription for a medical condition.
Look at the pillow and mattress together
Your shoulder and torso sink into a mattress by different amounts. Changing the mattress, adding a topper, or sleeping in a different bed can therefore change how much space your pillow needs to fill. Shoulder width alone cannot give you a reliable shopping measurement.
The NHS advises keeping your head at the same height as the rest of your body when sleeping. Treat this as a general alignment check, rather than a promise that a particular angle prevents pain. A mirror or a photograph taken by someone you trust can help you notice a large tilt while you are awake. It cannot diagnose the cause of discomfort.
Use your usual position as a starting point
| Usual position | What to look for on the bed | Useful adjustment to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Side | Your head feels supported without being tipped toward or away from the mattress | A little more or less compressed height |
| Back | The pillow does not seem to push your chin toward your chest | A lower fill setting or a different contour |
| Several positions | You can turn without repeatedly rebuilding the pillow | An adjustable fill or a shape with usable edges |
These are comparison prompts, not a universal low/medium/high prescription. Follow individual advice if a clinician has recommended a position or support arrangement. Do not force an uncomfortable posture just to match a diagram.
For position-specific checks, read our guides for side sleepers and back sleepers.
Run a small fit check
Start in your normal setup: the same mattress, protector, pillowcase, and bedding. Put your shoulders on the mattress, settle into your usual position, and notice whether you are scrunching the pillow, sliding away from it, or placing an arm beneath it. Your habits can identify what to investigate; they are not proof of a defect.
If the manufacturer permits fill adjustment, remove or add a small amount, close the inner liner fully, and compare again. Store removed fill in a sealed container away from children and pets. Do not cut open a sealed foam pillow. For a fixed pillow, record the problem and compare another height or construction within the seller’s actual return rules.
Use a short note such as “lower fill, same case, easier to turn.” There is no required number of nights to endure pain. Stop using an arrangement that causes new or worsening discomfort, and seek help for persistent symptoms.
Read the listing like a specification
Before ordering, find the dimensions, whether loft is adjustable, the fill material, and the care instructions for both cover and core. Confirm whether the listed height is measured at the highest edge of a contour or through its center. A curved pillow may have more than one height.
For an example of an adjustable construction, the Calm Eden Flex listing describes removable shredded fill and Standard/King options. Calm Eden shares our ownership. This is an example of a feature to inspect, not a pillow we have tested or a guaranteed fit.
Your buying brief
- My usual sleeping position is: ____.
- My current pillow feels too high, too low, or inconsistent when: ____.
- My mattress or topper changed recently: yes / no.
- I need to confirm these measurements and care details: ____.
- The seller allows this type of opened-product return, with these costs: ____.
Once the height is plausible, compare the feel of memory foam and latex. Height and firmness are separate decisions; paying more for a material will not fix a poor fit.
