The PillowBrief guide

How to clean a memory foam pillow without guessing

Separate the case, cover, and foam core before cleaning. Follow a label-first plan for spills, drying, and deciding when to replace.

A pillow can have three separate cleaning instructions: one for the pillowcase you bought, one for the removable cover, and one for the filled core. Treating all three as ordinary laundry is an easy way to damage a product that was otherwise usable.

Start by finding the sewn-in label and the exact model’s care page. If they disagree, contact the manufacturer before washing. A generic internet recipe cannot establish that your foam tolerates water, detergent, agitation, or heat.

Identify what you can remove

Lay the pillow on a clean, dry surface and remove only the layers intended to come off. Do not unzip a loose-fill liner just because it has a zipper; check whether the opening is for adjustment or service. Keep loose filling contained and away from children and pets.

Layer What to find before cleaning Common mistake to avoid
Pillowcase Fiber content and laundering label Assuming a silk or blended case follows cotton settings
Removable cover Whether machine washing and drying are permitted Treating the cover instructions as instructions for the core
Foam or filled core The exact manufacturer’s cleaning method Soaking, wringing, or machine washing without permission

Tempur-Pedic provides a useful example of this distinction. Its care page says never to wash TEMPUR material, while the covers on many of its pillows can be removed and washed. It recommends consulting the tag when cover removability is uncertain. Other manufacturers may specify different methods. If your pillow has fiber, down or feather fill instead of a foam core, our guide to washing pillows covers machine washing, hand washing and drying.

Respond to a spill carefully

Remove the case and a removable cover promptly, if the instructions allow. Use an absorbent towel to lift surface moisture without scrubbing or twisting the foam. Then follow the manufacturer’s spill procedure. Do not improvise by pouring vinegar, peroxide, fragrance, disinfectant, or detergent into the core.

Some materials are not intended to become wet at all. In that case, contact the maker about the spill rather than turning a small wet area into a soaked pillow. Ask what cleaning is possible and what signs would make the pillow unsuitable to reuse. A persistent smell can mean the problem was not resolved; covering it with perfume does not clean it.

Give drying the space it needs

If a permitted cleaning method introduces moisture, follow its drying instructions and wait until the pillow is fully dry before putting the cover back on. Do not use an arbitrary “two hours” rule: construction, moisture, airflow, and room conditions vary.

Avoid a tumble dryer, hair dryer, radiator, or direct heat unless the manufacturer specifically allows it. Heat can affect foam and covers. A dry surface alone does not confirm that the inside is dry. If you cannot establish that a soaked core can be safely dried, ask the manufacturer whether replacement is the appropriate option.

Make the next clean easier

Keep the model name and a photograph of its care label with your household records. Use a correctly sized case and, if compatible with the pillow, a removable protector that you can wash as instructed. Check that the extra layer does not compress the pillow into a different shape or make it feel uncomfortably warm.

Inspect seams, filling, and odor while changing the case. Cleaning will not restore a crumbling core, repair a split seam, or correct a pillow that has lost usable support. Use our replacement checklist to separate a care problem from a fit problem.

Before you start

Find the exact model, identify each layer, read its own instructions, and make enough time for the permitted drying process. If any step remains unclear, stop and ask the manufacturer. A brief check is cheaper than replacing a pillow damaged by an unsuitable cleaning shortcut.
