In my years as a bedding buyer, I watched hundreds of customers squeeze pillows in the aisle — testing softness, which tells them almost nothing — and walk out with whatever felt nice for four seconds. Almost nobody asked the question that predicts whether a pillow will work: how tall is it going to be at 3 a.m. with a head on it?
That number is loft, and getting it wrong is the most common, most fixable sleep mistake I know. Too-tall pillows bend necks up. Too-flat pillows bend necks down. Both produce the same stiff, one-sided morning ache that people blame on "sleeping weird." They didn't sleep weird. They slept eight hours with a bent neck because the pillow's height didn't match their body and position.
What loft actually means (and the shelf-height trap)
Loft is a pillow's height, but the number that matters is compressed loft: how tall the pillow stands with your head's full weight on it. A down pillow can measure 8 inches on the shelf and compress to 2. A firm molded-foam pillow might measure 5 and compress to 4.5. The shelf height is marketing; the compressed height is your neck's reality.
This is why material and loft are inseparable. When a label says "medium loft," it's describing the pillow at rest. Whether that medium holds up depends on fill density and your head's weight — heavier heads compress more, which is one reason petite and broad sleepers need different pillows even in the same position.
The loft chart

The three adjustments nobody mentions
Mattress firmness. This one changes everything for side sleepers. On a soft mattress your shoulder sinks an inch or two into the bed, shrinking the gap — drop your loft accordingly. On a very firm mattress the shoulder rides on top, and you need every inch of pillow the chart promises. If you get a new mattress, re-check your pillow. They are one system.
Head weight and pillow fill. Denser fills (molded foam, latex) hold loft under any head. Light fills (down, polyester) hold loft only under light heads. If you're a bigger person who loves soft pillows, you need a taller starting point than the chart says, because you'll compress more of it away.
Where you put your arm. Side sleepers who tuck a hand under the pillow add an inch or two of effective loft — and should size the pillow down to compensate. Nobody warns you about this. Now you've been warned.
Pillowcase bulk. A small one, but real in testing: a thick protector plus a heavy pillowcase can add a measurable half inch of effective height and reduce how much a soft fill compresses. If your perfect pillow turned merely fine after you added a waterproof protector, that's why — re-run the photo test with the full bedding stack you'll actually sleep on.
The self-test that beats any label
Here's the protocol we use in reviews, and it takes two minutes. Lie in your normal position on your normal mattress, on the pillow you're evaluating. Have someone photograph you from behind (side sleeping) or from the side (back sleeping). Draw an imaginary line from the center of your forehead through your nose, chin, and sternum. Straight line, correct loft. Head tilting toward the mattress, too low. Head pushed away from it, too high. No helper? Prop your phone against the lamp and use the timer.
Run the test again after a week — pillows settle, and some lose half an inch in the first nights of use. The photo doesn't care about brand stories. It's the most honest pillow review you'll ever get.
Loft isn't static — the aging curve
A pillow's loft on day one and day ninety are different numbers. Down and polyester compress permanently as the fill breaks in and mats, losing a quarter to half their height in the first months. Shredded foam migrates and needs a nightly fluff to redistribute. Solid foam and latex hold their height longest but slowly soften, which lowers compressed loft without changing the shelf measurement. This is why a pillow that tested perfect in January can be quietly wrong by summer — and why the photo test above is worth repeating on a schedule rather than once.
When in doubt, buy adjustability
Everything above points to an awkward truth: your correct loft is a specific number, and fixed pillows come in whatever height the factory chose. Adjustable-fill pillows close the gap — unzip, remove or add fill, re-run the photo test. For side sleepers between sizes, combination sleepers, and anyone whose mattress is due for replacement, adjustable is the answer that survives every variable.
